Brazilians call it Amazonia because it covers the state of Amazonas and several other states and is almost the size of China. This Jungle is fantastically extensive. You should fly by day, and if the weather is clear you will be amazed by hours of endless jungle, most of it still pristine.

Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas is located 1500 Kms upriver, where the rivers Negro and Solimoes join to form the Amazon river. It is very hot at all times in this region. There are only two seasons: Rainy season from January to July, and dry season from august to December.
Manaus is a tax free zone intended to stimulate the local industry and create jobs for the more than one million inhabitants. There are very good hotels in Manaus, and several Jungle tours can be made from there. Also there is the famous theater built during the splendor years of the rubber boom in the end of the 19th century.
Fishing is a very popular sport here, and you can get on a boat hotel for a fishing expedition. Some of these boats are very comfortable. The best Jungle lodges are in the vicinity and you will most probably take a boat or a small plane from Manaus to get to your lodge.

Belem is the capital of the state of Para and is located about 100 Kms upriver from the ocean. The river is called the Para river, but it is actually part of the Amazon river encounter with the ocean and the large island of Marajo, which lays right across from Belem.
Belem is a very large city, more than 1.000.000 people, and has a variety of good hotels, jungle lodges and boat hotels for fishing tours and jungle tours. A visit to the island of Marajo is a real adventure. There are several hotels on the island. Marajo is the largest fluvial island in the world.
Cattle ranches are the main activity, and the water buffalo is the king of the island. For meat, milk, cheese and leather, this sturdy animal is perfectly adapted in this area.
The water buffalo is also used for riding, with saddles, and even the local police patrol's the island riding on these animals. Tourists are also invited to ride them and take a picture to astound their friends back home.
