To us Brazilians, Football (soccer) is the most important thing in the world. Cheering for our favorite team is an everyday preoccupation. When a child is born it will get a small tee shirt with the father's team colors, especially if it's a boy, then, later when he starts to walk, the father will give him a ball, and start coaching him in this very fine art, and most Brazilians will play football from infancy until they can't run any longer.

The games played by the professional teams are watched on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the stadiums or on TV, and cheerers for opposing teams will be nagging each other non stop. Every aspect of yesterday's game will be discussed in detail. Everybody knows the names of most of the players and coaches. Well I guess this is not very different from other parts of the world, but it seems to me that Brazilians are more concerned with their favorite sport than any other country.

There are large stadiums in all the cities, and the largest one is the "Maracana" in Rio.

If you are lucky, there will be a "Classic" while you are around, which means two major teams from the first division, historical opponents, will face each other for a decision of the state or the Brazilian championships. If you wish to have the experience of your life, then go to watch this, live at the stadium. It is unbelievable. Have your tour guide or your hotel arrange for the tickets and for a good and safe seat.
