Minas Gerais State
The state of Minas Gerais, (general mines) is the main source of gold, diamonds and all kinds of other precious stones, plus iron ore, aluminum and other important minerals.
Belo Horizonte
is the capital of Minas Gerais and is located about 500Kms from Rio or Sao Paulo. It is a large industrial city dedicated mainly to supply the mining industry, but not far from Belo Horizonte, about 90 Kms East, there is the historical city of Ouro Preto, which means black gold.
In Ouro Preto
there are many beautiful 17th century buildings, preserved and protected, several churches and a museum to see. The museum is dedicated to the history of Independence struggle against Portugal. Also, at the engineering School of Mines, there is a wonderful museum of mineralogy with the largest collection of Brazilian precious stones available.
Very close to Ouro Preto there is the small city of Mariana, where you cantour a gold mine and enter an old mining tunnel going down 300 meters down the rock.
Also, not to far from Belo Horizonte going south about 100 Kms there is another small preserved historical city: Tiradentes, which is worth visiting. The people of Minas Gerais are called the "Mineiros" which can be translated as miners. They are very friendly and hospitable. Calm and generally quiet, but they love to dance and sing. You will most certainly enjoy your stay in Minas. The weather is generally warm and pleasant.
