The Pantanal Wetland is a wonderful adventure for tourists. Thousands of Brazilians visit it every year, mainly for fishing expeditions, but also for watching the animals and birds which are so very abundant in this vast area.
There are several types of fishing expeditions possible in the Pantanal.
You can stay at a hotel and go fishing on de river banks or take a boat hotel, which is very comfortable.
The boat hotel will tipically start from Corumba and will motor upriver for seversl days. There are several aluminum fishing boats with outboard motors which are towed along and each one has an experienced pilot who knows the best fishing spots.
Each morning after breakfast the tourists/fisherman will leave the boatel one pair plus pilot in each aluminum outboard, and will advance upriver and enter some of the adjoining waterways and lakes to go after specific types of fish, or just to see the wildlife. By late noon these boats will return to the boatel which has caught up with them, and will take their catch to be cleaned and fried.
The alligators will be swarming around for the surplus fish and will clean up what the pilots will throw them. The aggressive Piranha is easily fished here and tastes very good when fried. You must be careful when taking a piranha off the hook. Beware the sharp teeth. Better let the pilot take care of it.
There are usually nice showers on the deck to refresh from the heat. Some of the larger boats even have small pools for the guests.
The boatel will motor day and night for some 200 Kms, away from civilization, and then turn back to return effortlessly downriver back home.
There are several other locations where the boat hotels are stationed.
Bonito is another place to see in the Pantanal. The rivers there are very clear and the fish are protected and can be watched and photographed underwater while snorkeling.
Also there are some beautiful falls to be visited here. Several hotels are available in Bonito.
