Salvador, in the state of Bahia, deserves an extended visit and will fascinate the attentive traveler.
Originally, Salvador was the first capital of Brazil. The city still has many of the ancient buildings and churches preserved and you can stroll along the picturesque old center called the "Pelourinho"
There are places where you can watch "Capoeira" which is an African martial arts form which was perfected in Salvador by the Negro population and now is a very popular show/dance practiced to the sound of claping hands and the "Berimbau" which is a primitive instrument with a very distinctive sound.
In the middle of the port in front of Salvador there is a round shaped fort called Forte Sao Marcelo. Constructed around 1650 to protect the city against the Hollanders, it is totally isolated from the land, and you have to take a boat to get there.
There are wonderful beaches in Salvador with many good hotels. The first beach has the famous lighthouse "Farol da Barra" and there is another lighthouse at the beach of Itapua where you can also visit the magical black lagoon of Itapua, surrounded by bright white sands.
A tour by boat or ferry to the beautiful island of Itaparica is worth the trip. Bue ocean, colored sails, and unforgettable setting.
Also there are many hotels on the island if you care to spend a time there. It is a very large island, and there is a lot to see.
Itaparica is located 13 Kms from Salvador, in the Bay of All Saints and the trip takes normally 45 minutes, but there is a faster air conditioned catamaran ferry which gets there in 25 minutes.
Further, the island can also be reached by car, but it is a long way from Salvador.
And finally, there is an airport on the island with daily flights.
Some 400 Kms down the coast of Bahia, there are the cities of Ilheus and Itabuna centers of the cacau market and surrounded by the plantations.
At Ilheus you will find wonderful beaches and hotels to enjoy them, and also you can visit the settings of the stories written by Jorge Amado, who used to live in the city. You can have a beer at the "Vesuvio" the bar described in "Gabriela cravo e canela" and you can drive to a plantation and see how cocoa is processed before it becomes chocolate.
Further South down the coast, still in Bahia, is Porto Seguro, Arraial D'Ajuda and Trancoso. All these small fishing villages became recently very fashionable vacation resorts.
The warm and sunny weather all year round makes it the favorite for Brazilian travelers.
